1. Who we are
This Club has been running continuously since the early 1990s, and has connections to Cambridge University, England, but we welcome anyone who is keen to play, both men and women.
2. What we do
We run a fairly high-standard 5-on-5 full-court run-and-gun pick-up basketball session, usually once a week, and sometimes twice a week when there is peak demand. We meet regularly on Tuesdays; when we run a second session it is on Thursdays. People can attend as regularly or as seldom as they want.
3. Our rules of play
We normally have 10-15 attending, and 15 is the maximum number of players we allow at any session (there is a strict online sign-up booking system). We play first to 4 baskets, after which winners stay on-court and losers sub for the waiting players/team. We leave it up to the offense (actually only the person with the ball) to call defensive fouls.
4. The doodle signup system
When you become a Club member by subscribing to the email list (on this page, below), you will be sent details of a doodle.com page that we use for session signups, and which has details of locations/times/costs. Links to maps are in the comments section on the doodle page.
Please adhere to the following system for signups (and refer back to this page when necessary):
4.1. Only the first 15 people who sign up for a particular session will be able to attend. Future sessions are posted on doodle periodically, normally one week's worth every week, and then everyone has a chance to book a spot. I post new sessions shortly after the last active session has been played. I send out an email to inform everyone when I post new sessions to doodle.
4.2. If you want to play, sign up in the main doodle table (whether or not you have made it into the first 15).
4.3. The Count at the top of the columns shows how many (green) signups there are for each date. When viewing in a browser, the most recent entries are at the top of the column, whereas when viewing in the app, the most recent entries are at the bottom of the column. If there are more than 15, it is therefore clear which ones are on the waiting list for that session, and their order. Entries labelled "(last)" are to be treated as if they come after the others. If/when people cancel their entries, by editing and unchecking a particular session, the column count changes automatically and it is always clear who is in the first 15 for each session.
4.4. Sometimes multiple sessions are posted on doodle, and in those cases if you have already signed up for an active session but later want to sign up for another active session for which 15 or more people are already signed up, you will need to add a separate entry for that one, not edit your existing entry, otherwise you will (wrongly) jump the queue.
4.5. The commitment deadline is 11pm the night before the session. If you are in the first 15 at this deadline, and either don't show up or cancel late, then you will have to pay for the missed session unless you can arrange for someone to take your spot, preferably by contacting those in the waiting list.
4.6. If you ever cancel, whether before or after the commitment deadline, or are a no-show, in all cases there is a penalty that you must put yourself at the end of any waiting list for the next session where you want to play (nothing personal). This is to be indicated by putting "(last)" next to your name for that session, so anyone who signs up afterwards knows to ignore your position in the list.
For all questions and procedures regarding cancellations or post-deadline signups or go-to-last penalties, please check the Doodle-specific Frequently Asked Questions page.
5. Payments must be sent electronically at the time of booking or earlier
5.1 Please make sure you send your fees at the moment you book or in advance of booking, by electronic means (payment details are in a comment on the doodle page and in the Welcome email). If possible please use a reference that says BBall and gives your first name (if not shown in your bank account name).
5.2 If you cancel before the commitment deadline - don’t worry - I keep a record of payments and yours will be retained as credit to pay for your next booking.
5.3 If you choose to send me at least £30 bulk payment in advance for sessions, it saves me time so I am happy to send a quick reminder when your bulk credit runs out (but only for bulk advance payments of £30 or more).
6. Emails
6.1. Do NOT send an email about pre-deadline cancellations. DO send an email if you cancel AFTER the deadline, to see if one of the others can take your spot.
6.2. Regarding broadcast emails, feel free to email everyone about human issues, e.g. injuries, leavings, parties, outings, drinks... but not pre-deadline cancellations.
6.3. There will be one auto-reminder email sent to the mailing list per session, at 4pm the day before the session, giving 7 hours notice of the commitment deadline. The subject will give the session time, duration, location and cost. The body will give the doodle.com signup link.
Cheers,
Vaughan Wittorff
